Polymer Kundis to Conserve Water
« on: December 13, 2011, 10:37:05 PM »
Due to poor ground water quality and lack of water resources such as rivers and canals the Churu district in Rajasthan faces acute water scarcity. The Bhoruka Charitable Trust (BCT) is encouraging villagers to build and renovate Kundis or tanks, Johads or ponds, Talabs or permanent ponds and dugwells to deal with the problem of water scarcity. The kundi has a central circular catchment area sloping towards the center where there is a storage structure. The water is generally hygienic and good and no water contamination occurs if the kundi is maintained properly. It is easy to maintain the kundis. To construct the catchment area of the kundi, local materials like clay, silt, lime, ash and gravel are traditionally used. Some part of the rain is lost due to uncontrolled seepage as these structures do not make a completely impermeable layer.

To enhance the runoff BCT is now making efforts in collaboration with Hyderabad based National Geophysical Research Institute and Indian Institute of Chemical Technology. Their efforts have led to the identification of ways to generate about 60-70% runoff depending upon the intensity of rainfall, making use of new techniques of polymer science. To increase runoff from Kundis, non-toxic polymer solution based on water that permeate the high porous sandy soils are used. These binders reduce permeability and infiltration rate of sandy soils by acting as binders. Better runoff is achieved by using water repelling chemicals in combination with some binding agents.

Such different methods of conserving water are being used in all parts of the country. builders in Kochi are using various techniques to save water from the abundant rain received by the state by using different methods of rain water harvesting.
